Draw A Tugboat: All Steps

In this beginner's lesson, we are going to discover to draw a tugboat with your drawing materials. We will consider the different sizes and shapes of each part of the tugboat. The lines in each step is drawn out in blue so you can plainly see the most recent lines that you will be working on.

Time Needed: 30 minutes

  1. Draw The Hull

    Draw A Tugboat: Step 1

    First, draw the top part of the hull by making an elongated shape curving upward. Next, create the side of the hull by forming the curved line as shown. Make sure to draw the bottom of the hull a bit wavy since it is touching the surface of the water.

  2. Form The Cabin

    Let's form the cabin by first drawing an L-shape. Next, create a horizontal rectangle on top to create the cabin's roof. Then, form a rectangle to draw the cabin's windshield.

  3. Add Portholes

    Now let's add portholes on the cabin. To draw a porthole, create a circle within a circle as shown.

  4. Attach The Smokestack

    Attach the tugboat's smokestack by first drawing two long vertical lines attached to the back of the cabin. Next, draw a rectangle on top to form the chimney cap. Then, make two curved lines on the body of the smokestack as shown.

  5. Create Smoke

    Create smoke coming out of the smokestack by creating a bumpy rounded shape.

  6. Draw Tires

    Draw tires hanging from the side of the tugboat's hull by forming ring shapes along the hull. These tires are called fenders which serve as a bumper to protect the tugboat from external impact.

  7. Outline The Rope

    Outline the rope attached to the tires by drawing two vertical lines on top of each tire.

  8. Draw The Waves

    Draw the waves on the water by creating wavy horizontal lines.

  9. Complete The Tugboat Drawing

    Let's complete the tugboat drawing by adding some color! First, use a red crayon to color the bottom of the hull, the roof of the cabin, and as well as the chimney cap and the stripe on the smokestack. Next, color the walls of the cabin with a yellow crayon. Then, fill in the rest of the smokestack with a white crayon. Don't forget to color the smoke coming out of the smokestack with a gray crayon! Now, color the top of the hull with a blue crayon and the tires with a gray crayon. Shade the windshield and portholes on the cabin with a purple crayon. After that, use an orange crayon to color the outer part of the portholes. Use a blue crayon to shade the body of water. Finally, let's fill in the sky with shades of orange to make it look like it's sunset!
